ID cards were the last straw - Standard membership:

The 1952 Committee was created when the Conservative party, under Michael Howard, backed the introduction of ID cards. For some conservative bloggers this was the final straw and many of them started to declare on their blogs that they would not be voting Tory at the next election. I began collecting and listing these declarations under the 1952 Committee heading chosen because it was the year in which Winston Churchill abandoned ID cards in post war Britain.

Honourable membership:

Then other conservative minded bloggers, who had already made their minds up not to vote Tory because of other issues, started applying for membership. They were disgusted that the Tories were backing ID cards and wanted to make that point by joining the committee. The category - Honourable or (Hon) - was created for these bloggers. These are conservatives who would now not vote Tory even if policy improved in other areas.

Membership in spirit:

Another category of membership is Spirit. These are conservative minded bloggers who are unable to vote in UK general elections but who want to show their support anyway. It also has other uses.

The general feeling is that the 1952 Committee consists of bloggers who are conservatives, but not Tories, the party having become something that they feel no longer represents them adequately.

Here is the blog post that started it all off. It contains some useful images that members can display if they wish.

If you are against ID cards then you should pay a visit to NO2ID. They are the real campaign against ID cards, a campaign for anyone and everyone who is against the scheme. The 1952 Committee is not a substitute for it in any way and you should not think of it as such. Think of it like a club for pissed off conservative bloggers.
