John Redwood and an Engolish Parliament

Via Iain we see that John Redwood is a fan of some sort of English Parliament sitting at Westminster. I’m not entirely sure how his position actually differs from the Tory notion of English votes on English matters but it’s good so see another MP come out in support of a fairer deal for the people of England.

I think the time when we could at least consider British citizenship to mean the same thing for all the people of Britain has now gone. Indeed, and as I have said before, the very notion of being British is now an even looser concept than it has been in the past. It’s a tragedy (in the making I suspect) but there is very little that we can do about it practically at this stage. All we can now hope for is that all the people of Britain are given the same opportunities through their elected representatives and, given that these opportunities are structured around traditional national groupings, the same privilege must be offered to the people of England. Anything else (the regional agenda for instance) is unworkable and would simply compound the problem of the divergence of rights or, which is likely with a regional agenda, never see the same kind of power offered.

It’s good that more MP’s seem to be warming to the idea of English government, it’s just a shame that Redwood is a bit of a joke.
